Where to find great afro-caribbean product

Hair - hair pieces, extensions, wigs

There are two types of hair that may be used for making a hair piece or wig for a black person's hair piece or wig. You have the choice of using either Human Hair or Synthetic.

Afro textured hair

This type of hair is tightly coiled, with a thick appearance and feel. This type of hair is typically found in people of sub-saharan African descent.

Many of the populations of N E Africa have looser hair that is not so tightly coiled as that of most other Africans.

People of African descent with tightly coiled hair are found in large numbers throughout the United States of America, the Caribbean, and Latin America.

Some other groups of people also have tightly coiled hair, including Khoisan of southern Africa, the Negrito of the Andaman Islands and south-east Asia and the Melanesian populations of the Pacific.

Cornrows

Cornrows are a traditional style of hair grooming of African origin where the hair is tightly braided very close to the scalp, using an underhand, upward motion to produce a continuous, raised row.

Cornrows can be formed, as the name implies, in simple, straight lines; or, in complicated geometric or curvilinear designs. Often favoured for their easy maintenance, cornrows can be left in for weeks at a time simply by carefully washing the hair using a stocking cap or hair net and then regularly oiling the scalp and hair.

Corn rowed hairstyles are often adorned with beads or cowry shells, in the African tradition.

Braids

A braid refers to any object created by interweaving or twinning three or more separate strands of one or more material in a diagonally overlapping pattern.

Braids are commonly involved in hairstyling. Simple braids with more than three strands can be flat or tubular and generally contain an odd number of strands.

Complex braids have been used to create hanging fibre artworks. A braid is similar to a plait, which covers any type of knot forming a repeated pattern.

Dreads

Dreadlocks — Dreads, Locks, or Locs — are matted ropes of hair which will form by themselves if the hair is allowed to grow without the use of brushes, combs, razors or scissors for a long period of time.

The word itself comes from the Bible and the "dread" of God.

Dreadlocks are a universal phenomenon and through the ages, people of various cultures have worn dreadlocks.

It can be said that what are known today as "dreadlocks" are one of the oldest and most universal hairstyles known.

Big hair styles

An afro, sometimes shortened to "'fro", is a hairstyle in which the hair extends out from the head like a halo or cloud. Itmay be several times the diameter of the head. This style gained popularity in the 1960s.

afro hairAn afro requires tight curls and, usually, coarse hair which typically people of indigenous African descent naturally have.

Anyone of any ethnic background however, is capable of acquiring an afro by using curling tongs and hair gel. With naturally kinky hair, the spiralling, tightly coiled curls can be straightened out somewhat, giving the hair added volume and length, by first braiding the hair, then separating the coils using an afro pick, a narrow comb with long, widely spaced teeth.

During recent years many African Americans, and others, have started wearing them as an edgy or retro fashion.

Hair Colouring

Most hair colour products now smell better than the old rotten-egg that was once associated with permanents or hair colouring. And most are easy to use.

Of course it is still the chemicals in hair colouring that can be harsh and harmful to your hair if you don't know what you're doing or if you use them too often.

Fortunately there are plenty of products that help to condition your hair when you are using chemically based colourings.

When travelling to the Caribbean, it's hard not to notice the intricate cornrows and micro-braids worn by both residents and tourists alike.

It's quite common for St. Lucian residents who choose not to relax their Afro-Caribbean hair, to create braids that look beautiful and keep their faces and necks cool.
